Compare the surcharge with the points price
The 45,000-point New York-to-London fare has the lowest points price, but it also carries a four-figure surcharge. The Rome fare has a four-figure surcharge as well.
By comparison, the 50,000-point New York-to-Zurich fare carries a surcharge in the low tens. The 70,000-point Los Angeles-to-Paris fare also has a very small surcharge. Once both parts of the cost are considered, Zurich compares especially well within this group.

- Rome (430 finds): business half at or below 90,000 points, most often 75,000 (47 of 277). Economy half at or below 25,000 (105 finds).
Nonstop business fares were common to London (181 of 345 finds) and rare to Rome (3 of 277).

Which programs priced these cities
Flying Blue priced the cheapest fare more often than any other program in all three cities: 79 of the 544 London finds, 94 of the 539 Paris finds, and 100 of the 430 Rome finds. Air Canada Aeroplan was next for Paris (67) and Rome (72). For London, American Airlines AAdvantage (78) and Qatar Airways (68) were close behind.
Flying Blue is also the easiest to reach: Amex, Bilt, Capital One, Chase, and Citi points all transfer to it at 1:1 in the transfer grid PointsGPT uses. Aeroplan takes Amex, Bilt, Capital One, and Chase at 1:1, and AAdvantage takes Citi at 1:1.
The cash part follows the program
Across 2,171 business finds to 20 European cities, the cash part (taxes, fees, and carrier surcharges per traveler) split clearly by program:
- Mostly four figures: Qantas (174 of 187 finds), Emirates Skywards (29 of 34), and Alaska Atmos (130 of 180).
- Three figures: Flying Blue (342 of 343) and Virgin Atlantic (30 of 30).
- Mostly one or two figures: United MileagePlus (327 of 329) and Delta SkyMiles (75 of 75).
- Mixed: Air Canada Aeroplan (252 two-figure, 136 three-figure of 406) and AAdvantage (42 single, 81 two, and 159 three-figure of 283).
The cash part was not recorded on Qatar Airways or Turkish Airlines finds, so check those on the program's site.

Carrier-imposed charges often depend on the operating airline, and the airline program used to book may pass those charges on. That is why two fares with similar points prices can require very different cash payments.
