Award Flights to South Africa: What to Know

What the recorded finds show

A recorded find is the cheapest award fare a PointsGPT search returned in the cabin and on the dates the person asked for. The figures below are airline miles, one way, for one traveler, from US departures, recorded September to November 2026, as of 3 November 2026.

Cape Town (16 finds):

• Business (13 finds): 174,000 points was the most common price (5 of 13), and half were at or below 180,000. From New York, half of the 8 finds were at or below 174,000.
• Economy: only two finds, at 37,500 and 40,000 points.
• None of the Cape Town finds was nonstop.

Johannesburg (12 finds):

• Business (7 finds): half were at or below 110,000 points, and three quarters at or below 174,000.
• Economy: only two finds, at 37,500 and 45,000 points.
• The only nonstop finds were two United MileagePlus fares from Newark, one in economy and one in premium economy.

These samples are small, so read them as a guide, not a typical price.

Which programs priced these fares

Emirates Skywards priced more finds than any other program: 8 of the 16 to Cape Town and 6 of the 12 to Johannesburg. Flying Blue priced 3 of the Cape Town finds, and United MileagePlus and Delta SkyMiles 2 each of the Johannesburg finds.

These are the card points that reach those programs, from the transfer grid PointsGPT uses:

• Emirates Skywards: Bilt Points at 1:1, Amex Membership Rewards and Citi ThankYou Points at 5:4, and Capital One miles at 4:3.
• Flying Blue: Amex, Bilt, Capital One, Chase Ultimate Rewards, and Citi at 1:1.
• United MileagePlus: Bilt and Chase at 1:1.
• Air Canada Aeroplan: Amex, Bilt, Capital One, and Chase at 1:1.
• Delta SkyMiles: Amex at 1:1.

When a ratio is not 1:1, you need more card points than the miles price. Partner lists and ratios change, so check them first.

Start by comparing the cash and points costs

Points can be especially useful when the equivalent cash fare is high, as it often is on a journey of this length. The value still depends on the points price, surcharges, cabin, and cash alternative for your dates.

On this route the cash part varied a lot by program. Every Emirates business find carried a four-figure cash part, to both cities. The United, Aeroplan, and Alaska Atmos business finds to Cape Town carried two-figure ones, and the Flying Blue finds three-figure ones. Include connecting routes in your search

Direct services exist from a handful of cities. From most places you are connecting, usually through a European or Middle Eastern hub.

An empty direct search only tells you that no direct award fare appeared for that request. Connecting options require a manual check, but they can reveal itineraries that a direct-only search misses. Our guide to booking a connecting award flight walks through it.

Cape Town or Johannesburg?

Half the Johannesburg business finds were at or below 110,000 points, against 180,000 for Cape Town, and only Johannesburg had nonstop finds. If your trip can start in either city, search both.

Account for South Africa’s seasons

The southern summer runs from roughly November to March, when demand peaks and award availability can be tighter. If your schedule allows, compare nearby dates and shoulder months rather than relying on one fixed travel window.

Secure the long-haul flight first

Confirm the long-haul portion before arranging the rest of the trip. Domestic flights within South Africa are frequent and can be inexpensive, so compare a separate cash booking with the cost of including one in the award itinerary.

If the first search is empty, try other dates and routes. Award availability changes frequently, particularly on a trip with limited direct service.
