Economy award fares to Cancún from New York and Los Angeles came in at 8,200 to 10,000 points one way (3 finds) in PointsGPT's recorded finds, September and October 2026. Business ran from 20,000 to 42,800 points from Los Angeles (3 finds), and the three New York business finds were 23,000, 37,500 and 127,600 points. These are recorded finds for one traveler, one way, as of 20 October 2026. They were available when someone searched and may not be by the time you do. Award availability changes frequently.
What the recorded finds show
A recorded find is the cheapest award fare a PointsGPT search returned in the cabin and on the dates the person asked for. The figures below are airline miles, one way, for one traveler. When your card points transfer at 1:1, that is also the number of card points you need.
From New York (JFK, Newark and LaGuardia):
- Economy: two recorded finds, at 8,200 and 10,000 points.
- Business (3 finds): 23,000, 37,500 and 127,600 points.
From Los Angeles (LAX and the nearby airports):
- Economy: one recorded find, at 10,000 points.
- Business (3 finds): 20,000, 32,500 and 42,800 points.
From every departure city we recorded, including Boston, Dallas, Miami and Chicago:
- Economy (19 finds): 7,500 to 18,000 points. Half were at or below 9,500 and a quarter at or below 9,200.
- Business (23 finds): half were at or below 20,000 points, and 19 of the 23 were under 60,000.
Of the Cancún searches that reached our award data, 79% found at least one award fare in the cabin asked for (44 of 56). The samples are small, and one traveler can search the same trip more than once, so treat these as a guide to the range rather than a typical price.
Which programs priced these fares
Each search shows a board of fares, and we recorded which airline program sold each one. On the Cancún economy boards, the cheapest fare most often came through American Airlines AAdvantage, then Aeromexico and Air Canada Aeroplan. JetBlue TrueBlue appeared on more economy boards than any other program. On the business boards, the cheapest fares came through AAdvantage and United MileagePlus.
These are the card points that transfer to each of those programs, from the transfer grid PointsGPT uses:
- AAdvantage: Citi ThankYou Points.
- Aeromexico: Capital One miles at 1:1, and Amex Membership Rewards at 1,000 points to 1,600 miles.
- Aeroplan: Amex Membership Rewards, Bilt Points, Capital One miles and Chase Ultimate Rewards, all at 1:1.
- United MileagePlus: Bilt Points and Chase Ultimate Rewards at 1:1.
- TrueBlue: Chase and Citi at 1:1, Amex at 250 points to 200, and Capital One at 5 to 3.
Partner lists and ratios change, so check your card's current partner list before you move anything. A transfer cannot be undone, and the points stay in that program for good.
The cash part is small on this route
Every award fare carries taxes and fees paid in cash, and some programs add carrier surcharges on top. On the recorded Cancún finds, that cash part stayed small: two figures on the AAdvantage, United, TrueBlue and Aeromexico fares, and low three figures on the Aeroplan ones.
That makes Cancún a forgiving first award trip. A low points price here usually means a low total, which is not true on many long-haul routes. If you want to see how far apart the two can drift, the surcharge trap shows what happens when they do.
Check what business class means on your flight
Business to Cancún is a short flight from most US cities, and the front cabin varies by aircraft. Before you pay two or three times the economy price in points, look at the cabin on the flight you are booking. On a four-hour trip, the extra points may matter more than the extra legroom, and economy at about 10,000 points leaves room for the return.
Plan your search
- Flexible dates: search a whole month first, then narrow it once you see where fares appear.
- Groups and families: search for everyone at once. One award fare on a flight does not mean the same price is open for four.
If a fare you found is gone when you go to book, why award availability disappears explains the usual reasons.
Points or cash?
Before you transfer, compare the award fare's full cost, the points plus the cash part, with the cash fare for the same flight. When the cash fare is already low, paying cash can keep your points for a trip where they cover more. Our guide to points versus cash covers the questions to ask.
How to search it in PointsGPT
Type the trip the way you would say it, for example:
Economy from New York to Cancún, any weekend in February, 2 travelers
- Tell PointsGPT which card points you hold, so it can mark the fares those points reach.
- Compare the points and the cash part on each fare, not only the points.
- Confirm the fare with the airline program before you transfer, because the transfer cannot be reversed.
If a search comes back empty, widen the dates or try a nearby departure airport before you give up on the trip. Our winter sun guide has more short warm-weather trips from Los Angeles.
