Flying to Japan on Points: What to Know First

What the recorded finds show

A recorded find is the cheapest award fare a PointsGPT search returned in the cabin and on the dates the person asked for. Tokyo is the largest sample in our data: 652 finds from US departures, September to November 2026. The figures are airline miles, one way, for one traveler, as of 3 November 2026.

Tokyo (Haneda 463 finds, Narita 189):

• Economy (130 finds): half were at or below 36,250 points, and three quarters at or below 47,500. The most common price was 35,000. From Los Angeles, 11 of the 22 finds were 25,750.
• Business (413 finds): half were at or below 175,810 points, and a quarter at or below 115,000. The most common price was 110,000 (73 finds), then 250,000 (52).
• Nonstop: 51 of the economy finds and 81 of the business finds.

Osaka (Kansai, 35 finds):

• Economy (11 finds): half were at or below 47,700 points.
• Business (23 finds): half were at or below 217,686 points. The most common price was 250,000 (5 finds).
• None of the Osaka finds was nonstop.

High demand limits award availability

Demand for Japan remains high, and award fares in popular cabins can be claimed quickly. Some airline programs may not release suitable fares at all for the busiest dates, so an empty search can reflect limited availability rather than a problem with the search.

Adjust the factors that shape your search

Your dates. Flexibility is particularly helpful during cherry blossom season and the fall color weeks. Search a broader range first, then narrow it once you see where fares appear.

Your number of travelers. Finding one award fare does not mean the same flight has enough availability for two. Search for the full group from the beginning so the results match what you need to book.

Your reachable airline programs. Several airline programs serve Japan, and they may price the same flight differently. Focus on the programs that accept transfers from the points you hold.

Your arrival city. In our finds, the middle price to Osaka was higher than to Tokyo in both cabins, and Osaka had no nonstop finds. If Osaka or Kyoto is the goal, compare a Tokyo flight plus the train.

Which programs priced these fares

In Tokyo business, Emirates Skywards priced the most finds (132 of 413), then United MileagePlus (104), Flying Blue (69), and Air Canada Aeroplan (35). In Tokyo economy, Flying Blue priced the most (29 of 130), then Qatar Airways (27).

The cash part differed sharply. All 132 Emirates business finds carried a four-figure cash part, while 93 of the 104 United ones carried a single-figure one. Add the cash part to the points before you compare; the surcharge trap explains why.

Partner lists and ratios change, so check them before you transfer.

Check connecting routes as well as direct flights

Some routings to Japan connect through a hub. If a direct search is empty, a connecting itinerary may still be available for the same date.

Search broadly, then verify before transferring
